Why Buying an Inexpensive Portable Flash Drive Can be a Mistake

By Jason Sloan

Everyone wants the top deal when buying a product or service. This is especially true in the industrial world; the price of doing business is affecting your bottom line. Frequently price is a main factor. We definitely do not want to spend too much on a data storage product, like a USB memory stick or a Flash card, particularly when they all look the same.

A flash drive just stores info, right? The off-brand cheap product works as good as the name brand drive, correct? The answer's, yes and, no! Both devices will operate in the same way; they hold the same quantity of information. But that is where the similarity ends.

Not All Storage Items Are Created Equal

Let us take a look at memory storage chips, as another example. These are components in the PC that are employed as volatile memory. Your document is loaded from the hard disk into the memory so it can be edited. When you save the document, the updated data is written back to the hard disk for long-term storage. There are 3 types of memory vendors. One will purchase memory from some other person and put their name on it. The 2nd buys the memory parts, assembles them, and checks the finished assembly. The 3rd type manufactures all of the components themselves, assembles them, and checks them for quality and speed of performance. Plainly, the third has a higher quality assurance record, guaranteeing dependability.

Quality Versus Price

This concept was highlighted in a previous shopping excursion. I got a bulk pack of USB Memory Sticks that I hadn't heard of before because "the price was right". When placed in the computer's USB port, not a single one was recognised. A trip back to the store and bought some big brand drives that worked right off. The lesson was learned; the big brand drives were a touch more dear, but much more reliable. A search on the Internet will yield many product reviews, allowing you make informed decisions so you buy the best data storage product at the best price. When on the lookout for data storage devices, ask yourself what you can afford to buy, and what you cannot afford to lose, in terms of your data. That is your real bottom line.

Treat Data Recovery the Same Way

All parts can fail. When your data storage device fails and you need to have an usb memory stick recovery, ensure that you apply the same guidelines when out shopping for a data recovery service.
