Why Smiling is Healthy

By Rebecca Bratton

Would you like to feel better about yourself and enhance your self confidence? Why not try smiling more?! You can smile at friends family, of course, or you can try smiling at strangers on the street. Doing so is a great way to make new friends and help you feel good about yourself. There are days when your smile could make a person's day go better without you even knowing it. Smiling also comes with a few health benefits, and it assists your body to function better. As you smile as a result of good news or happiness, smiling also improves your health.

Having a smile on your face can help make you more attractive. Do you realize that we are drawn to people who smile and look pleasant? It's very welcoming to see a person with a smile. The are approachable. A smile can add that 'attraction factor'. You may see someone smiling who has this mystery surrounding them causing you to want to know what is so good that they're smiling about it. People with frowns, grimaces and scowls on their face tend to push people away. However, a smile will draw people in; not to mention you can push back the clock on aging too!

Smiling also has the ability to change our mood and reduce or relieve stress. Stress has a way of showing up in our faces. When you smile, it prevents you from looking too overwhelmed, worn down or tired. If you're feeling kind of stressed, take time to put on a happy face. The smile will hopefully reduce your stress some and you will be able to take better action. A far as your mood goes, chances are your mood will change for the better if you keep smiling. It can trick the body into helping change your mood so next time you feel a little down, try a smile. It also helps you stay positive.

When we really consider the benefits smiling has on a person's health we can consider the fact that not only does smiling lower your blood pressure, but it boosts your immune system too. Doing so also releases serotonin, natural pain killers and endorphins. Your immune system works better when you smile. The immune function used in your body improves most likely because you're more relaxed. A measurable reduction in your blood pressure can be seen when you turn that frown upside down. Test it out with your B.P. monitor next time you're at home, and notice the difference. Studies also show that smiling releases endorphins. Together serotonin, endorphins and natural pain killers make us feel good so smiling is like a natural drug.

The difference between smiling and smileys is that one is virtual and the other you use your own facial muscles for. One is copied and passed while the other also copied and pasted since smiles are infectious. Both are healthy for you and can brighten someone's day. Also both can be used daily! If you're a member of Facebook and like to chat with those you love who you don't get to see often, you can use Facebook smiley emoticons on them! Communicating with your loved ones is healthy especially when sharing love, so be sure to use the smileys when chatting online. Those will probably become just as contagious!
