Forget The Competition - Toshiba Netbook Review

By Gabriella Phillips

Seems like very good value for the price. I would give it five stars right now except that the delivery of the first defective machine makes me wonder a little about quality control and durability.

I needed Wi-Fi and the ability to upload photos, to access email and Yahoo messenger and the ability to upload routes to my Garmin via Map Source. I have had several Toshiba Laptops in the past and they all performed flawlessly.

Think I may buy another so my wife and I will both have one. Since I got this jewel, my iPad is just collecting dust.

It's very portable, easy to grip, has a decent webcam/microphone, and pretty good battery life. One thing I suggest doing is NOT upgrading to anything higher than Windows 7 Starter unless you upgrade to 2GB of RAM. It sometimes reads 8 or 9 hours. That's the main attraction to these smaller computing devices is usability and the fact that you can conveniently carry it around to almost anywhere.

You have to sort of pry the card out when you want it out, but if you leave a card docked there, like I do, it's not a problem and it doesn't dangerously stick out the side of the machine when you are putting it into a case. Plus they save the cost and complexity of a spring.

I purchased it over others due to the ergonomics and keyboard design and am not disappointed. Even the Office Starter program and Windows 7 Starter have proved to be adequate for my needs and I have not had to upgrade.

Plenty of space on the hard drive, though I use an external HD when I travel. I would highly recommend this netbook for its portability, full-size keyboard, and the Toshiba reliability. I might also put a 7200 RPM hard drive (one of the Western Digital Blacks) in it one of these days. This is a really nice Toshiba netbook, and I am pleased that I purchased it this week at Amazon. After reading most of the reviews on Amazon I made the decision to buy this machine. I have ordered a portable CD/DVD and a portable hard drive for it as well, of course from Amazon. Plus, that's what headphones are for son. Touchpad mouse can be a little dicey at times but nothing to lose my mind over. I've only had the little guy for 24 hours but everything is as advertised. All I wanted was something small and lightweight that I could type on to take notes at church. Suspend comes back in 5 seconds, hibernate in 10-15, both re-establish a wireless connection reliably. At this point this machine is starting to be fun. When I first booted it up, it was fast. I loaded MS Office on it and never noticed any slowdown.

The quiet keyboard also feels nice and the touchpad is very responsive. I also like that it comes preloaded with NS internet security netbook version which really has not slowed it down in any noticeable way.
