Adobe CDS: Keeping Communication Lines Safe

By Alex Cha

Have you heard of the term Adobe CDS? Basically, Adobe CDS is a way to secure crucial documents, forms, and data in the PDF file format. But you might ask, how does it work? And what exactly is it for?

This technology is typically used by institutions and businesses to secure the PDF files that they send over the Internet when sharing official documents with each other and with clients. It's a built in Certified Document Service (CDS) in the Adobe Reader software.

An author who is creating a document in Adobe or Acrobat uses the CDS to digitally sign it. The recipient knows that the document he received is verified and authentic when he sees the information bar at the top of the document. This carries a small blue logo of a ribbon at the top left of the page.

The Anti-Fraud Digital Signature

Adobe CDS is therefore crucial particularly when it comes to online communication. Email is often the most preferred communication method today due to its speed and convenience. Yet, various types of scammers, frauds, and phishers also proliferate online. With the modern technology, it seems easy for some enterprising but unethical individuals to forge official documents and pass them off as original in an Internet scam.

To avoid such things from happening, there exists these Certified Document Services. To promote online security and foil those underhanded dealings, similar technologies are used such as SSL certificates, code signing, root signing certificates, and PKI. The technology and development of these use modern encryption methods as well as the principles of cryptography.

Who Needs Adobe CDS?

Adobe CDS and other security services benefit a wide range of businesses and organizations, such as higher educational institutions, government organizations, public companies, banks and financial institutions, regulatory and standards institutions, and biopharmaceutical companies. Using some form of technology in securing information is also observed by other industries that seem to be a favorite target of fraudulent activities and scammers.

Many types of documents such as manuals, policies and legislation, official reports, operating documents, and financial documents are in need of verification by a certified organization as provided by Adobe CDS. These are mostly confidential documents which should be shared only within the circle of company communication lines.
