How Headphones With A Microphone Were Invented

By Thomas A. Price

In this era billions of people globally use headphones with a microphone to speak to their families and friends exactly the way they'd make use of a telephone. These items are seen as cheap, necessary items that bring people closer. Almost every family has at least one set and every day there are sales. Just after they were invented, however, absolutely nobody wanted them.

Stanford university student Nathaniel Baldwin was struggling in his studies. In the year 1910 he invented a headset. He was just a small time inventor with an idea nobody cared about and nobody wanted.

No private company wanted to buy the headset. Mass production was impossible for this reason. Two years of complete disinterest followed and Nathaniel probably forgot he'd ever invented anything.

However, World War one could be sensed on the horizon. The US navy seemed to predict it. They asked Nathaniel for 100 headsets. At last, his invention was being noticed.

Pilots began to use his headsets. In the cockpit, it was necessary to have light, comfortable communication. They improved on Nathaniel's invention to make a headset that was lighter and easier to use.

In fact, the exact headset these aviators invented is still in use today. Commercial pilots use it on flights and not a single improvement has been necessary. However, the invention had not yet achieved it's success until a man called Bell came into his own in the 60s.

The Bell machinists were painfully aware of the heaviness of their headsets. Wearing them all day was giving them neck pain and they were performing exercises to try to strengthen their neck muscles. An aviator headset was supplied to them and machinists found it perfect. It's still in use those today for the same reason.

Cellular telephones then hit the scene and headsets became necessary for public use. The business that developed a headset for the Bell machinists invented a headset for cellphones. Hands free communication became possible, with people chatting while driving, baking and working.

These days computer games have improved to the extent that interactive communication has become common and headsets are used this way. Voice recognition software has given them yet another place in the world. The market expands on a daily basis.

Headphones with a microphone are still evolving today. They are no longer considered luxury items but rather necessities in every home. Speaking to people across the globe is getting cheaper all the time and headsets are making the world smaller, loved ones closer and life more enjoyable.
