Mastering the Fundamentals of Starcraft 2

By Dante Valentino

It is never that easy mastering a new skill. There is going to be hard work and frustration involved. But if you truly want to become a good Starcraft 2 player then you need to learn the basics. Too many players just skip over the basic concepts which include macro and hot keys. Rather than just getting into the strategy of the game you need to learn about the controls first.

You need to break the habit of using just your mouse to select buildings and units. Instead you need to learn how to set your hot keys. Hot key each production building and each type of unit. For example lets say you were terran facing a zerg player with banelings. You would have to quickly select your marines to run away from the banelings in order to minimize your losses. Hot keys make this so much faster rather than just selecting your marines with the mouse.

Macro is another concept you need to practice to become a great player. It is all about keeping up with production. Macro simply refers to your ability to gather resources and spend them. You want to gather as many resources as you can to maximize your economy. Then spend them as fast as you get them. As a rule of thumb never let your bank exceed 500 minerals or gas.

To macro like a champ you need to keep a few guidelines in mind. One rule of thumb is to constantly produce workers. Even if you have 70 workers across 3 bases! You want to maximize your profits to invest in a large army that will take out your opponent. Also take advantage of the abilities of your race. Each race has an advantage for their economy. For example the terran can get an orbital command center and call down mules to really increase your resources.

Don't forget to use hot keys with your army as well. As you play Starcraft 2 more and learn about the strategies you will understand how important it is to control your army. Again using hot keys makes controlling the game much easier. If you are a protoss player that is getting stalkers and colossi you need to set each type of unit to their own hot key. Select your colossi, hold the control key, and set them to whatever number you feel most comfortable with. That way you can get them to retreat faster from air units like vikings while the stalkers take them down.

Once you have learned the controls of Starcraft 2 and have practiced keeping up with production you can then get into the strategic part of the game. This includes actually learning about the different strategies each race has. And of course this is when you want to learn build orders and unit counters. You should know what units to get when you see what units you will be facing. For example if you are a terran player facing a zerg player and they have roaches you do not want to face them with hellions and marines. Marauders are the best units to get against roaches early in the game.
