Methods Of Hard Drive Destruction

By Minnie Lowery

The world is becoming an ever more dangerous place. Gone are the days when daylight robbery was the biggest concern for most people. Now what most people are afraid of is cybercrime. When discarding old drives, it is important to use proper hard drive destruction methods to ensure that no one will obtain private information from the stored data.

Formatting or erasing the information on your disk drives will not be enough. Most data retrievers will easily be able to recover the lost information. This means that most hackers will also be able to recover the data by using readily available software.

Finding the easiest method to destroy this data can be important. If your computer has a lot of important information and you are worried someone may want to get it, you could prevent this by dipping the disk drive in a container that has hydrochloric acid. Caution should be observed as the acid may spill over. Remember to use protective gloves when handling the acid.

You could also decide to use a hammer to completely destroy your hard disk. It may be over the top, but anyone wishing to get the information would have to spend a substantial sum of money to retrieve the information.

If you have a grinder available, you could use it. This is more effective then using the hammer, especially if you completely grind the disk.

If you wish to sell your old computer, you should replace your disk drive before selling it. You never know who may purchase your computer and have access to your data. After replacing the drives, you should also ensure hard drive destruction instead of just throwing it in the trash.
