Building your first website using WordPress (Step 1)

By Mitch Desjarlais

In the coming article, you will learn how to create a website using the famous WordPress content management system.

Before we begin, you will first need to install WordPress on your local machine or web server. Most hosting providers offer tools, such as Fantastico, which will automatically install WordPress on the server for you, in just 5 minutes! If you prefer to install WordPress yourself, you will first need to have access to your web server, a text editor, an FTP client and your preferred web browser.

Once the install is complete, you can start by logging into the admin panel (a.k.a. back end) of your new site. Simply visit your website's login area by entering "wp-admin" after your domain name. Example, www.example.com/wp-admin. You can now login to WordPress using the username and password you supplied during the install.

When you enter the admin panel the first thing you see is the "Dashboard". This is the main administration screen. This section can only be accesses my administrators of the website. You can edit all of your pages, blog posts, categories, upload images and install plugins. There are different sections of the admin panel, they are the following:

- Dashboard - Posts - Media - Links - Pages - Comments - Appearance - Plugins - Users - Tools - Settings

A quick way to change the design (graphics) of your site is by going to the Appearance section using different themes (templates). You can download and install free or premium themes via the Appearance - Themes area. All themes can be modified to fit your needs. You can modify the graphics using programs as like Adobe Photoshop, Fireworks, Illustrator and customize the layouts of your chosen theme by using a WYSIWYG editor like Adobe Dreamweaver.

WordPress also comes outfitted with a multitude of plugins. These plugins (or add-ons) are software scripts that add different functions and events to your WordPress site. Most plugins are quite simple to install via the WordPress Admin Plugin Screen and are used to add basic organization to your blog posts and categories.
