Video Games Causing With Your Children? How You Can Make It Stop!

By Laura Scott

The most difficult things for me to understand being a mom is the way involved my girls are in video games. As a child I wasn't very big on video games, I was much more focused on reading and playing outside. Sure, I had a video game system as a kid, however it did not entice me as it does to my girls.

Like many other parents nowadays, I fought endlessly with my girls about video games. My girls were obsessed with them; they always aspired to find the coolest games console as well as the newest games, although Barbie video games were their most favorite. I can remember when my youngest received Barbie: The Island Princess for the DS for her birthday 1 year. As soon as she opened that Barbie video game, no other presents mattered. With her new Barbie game on hand, off she went to her room where she remained for what seemed hours.

I found myself literally in awe over this strange hold that video games appeared to have over the children. I had read all of the warnings in parents' magazines that speak about how bad video games were for children. I had even seen numerous reports on the news talking about exactly the same things and how several studies were done. With all this not so great news about video games, I was determined to stop them within my house. I grounded my girls from video games for days at any given time, sent them outside to spend time playing in the sun. I signed them up for dance lessons, took them over to the park, quite simply, I exhausted myself looking to distract them from the video games they seemed to love very much.

As you can imagine this battle against computer games within my house was exhausting. It looked like no matter what I did I really could not change my girls' minds over online games. I'm not really the type of parent who gives in to her children or am I the type to surrender when I want something. However, it seemed like this battle against computer games was going to defeat me. So, instead of attempting to fight their obvious desire for Barbie video games along with the pleasure these games gave them, I made the decision to evaluate them.

I grabbed my daughters DS and her Barbie Groom and Glam Pups game, the latest favorite Barbie video game, and started playing it. I probably got about a few minutes in the video game and was at a total loss in regards to what to do. It's no surprise that that video games still baffled me as an adult. Instead of chuck the game down in disgust I called my daughter inside the room to help me out. The surprise on the face when she saw me playing her video game was priceless.

My daughter sat down with me and patiently taught me a few things I was supposed to do. Before I knew it I was having a lot fun, sitting there giggling and laughing with my daughter, and I was even enjoying a video game. My daughter and I probably sat there for 2 hours, before I remembered that it was way past time to get dinner on the table. I quickly jumped up to go prepare dinner, but seeing the look on my daughters face made me stop short.

Rather than rushing out directly into kitchen, I sat down to talk with my daughter. My daughter was confused. She wasn't able to understand why I'd stop playing video games with her to go cook dinner because we have been having a good time. Oh how nice it truly is to be young! In place of just leaving her puzzled, I told her that yes I'm having fun, however I needed to address my responsibilities as well, basically if I decided not to prepare dinner, nobody would eat. Also, I reassured her that after dinner we were able to sit down and play a few more video games.

The simple truth is if you take the time to recognize my kids' pleasure in video games, I was able to see things I had never witnessed before. Video games may very well be fun, far more fun than reading a book. However, I still was on a pursuit to curb exactly how much the children played video games. Now I understood why they liked them. I found myself even enjoying them. All the same, that did not mean I supported my kids playing them nonstop, I knew that boundaries should be set.

In talking with my husband, who probably enjoyed online games a whole lot more than the kids did, we thought we would set up a family game night, only we chosen to do it two nights each week. Two times a week after dinner my daughters would go pick their favorite Barbie video game, which surely each one had her favorite. My youngest daughter loved the Barbie: Island Princess video game, while my older daughter preferred Barbie Groom and Glam Pups. We all took turns selecting the games for family night. And, in the process, every person benefited from spending some more time together as a family.

What I learned, as a parent from this experience is that hoping to ban something usually is not worth the battle, I prefer to save my battles for the really big things. By taking the time to hear the children and open up my mind, I figured that all the studies were exactly that a bunch of studies, only I know my children, and only I can determine if video games are hurting the kids. Now I have realized that video games are amazing, they can even be appreciated together. Therefore, although we never fight over whether video games must be played. We do have issues with moderating the length of time is allocated to video games. Now I won't lose that battle. Everything needs moderation!

Enterprise Scorecard - The silver lining in the cloud

By Martin Anderson

Conventional Information Systems need huge capital spending, and months (if not years) of exhaustive planning. Sadly as much as 7 out of every 10 IT projects fail (1), and in Britain big government- backed systems for the NHS, The Fire service, the DVLA, the Office of Environment, and the Ministry of Defence, and others have wasted more than ?26 bln in recent years (2). With the current depressed economic environment, it is not surprising that most firms (and families) are avoiding expenditure on all but the most necessary items. In the IT world, this sometimes means that thoughts of replenishing insufficient systems and infrastructure are delayed, or inferior solutions adopted. Whereas in Asia confidence and growth are booming (on the back of hard work and lower costs), in the West the power and influence of our economies is diminishing as our risk-aversion and costs rise. A new approach is needed.

Regardless of the "dot-com boom and bust" of the year 2000, we are now experiencing a new renaissance in the world of the Inter-Web. Forget the consumer sandboxes of FaceBook and YouTube, the most recent trend in business is a move away from localised monolithic IT systems to virtualisation and computing in the "cloud".

So first of all, what is "cloud computing" ? At one level, it essentially means the PC hardware no longer sits on your servers inside your office, but is now residing somewhere "out there" in a server farm run by a 3rd party. We no longer have to get and maintain the technology in-house, but instead we hire space from experts who can supply much higher levels of support, availability, trustworthiness and performance that may grow (or shrink) according to our wishes. Likewise, with the software that runs on this technology, there's a shift from of making an investment in large capital spending projects, to renting "Software as a Service" (SaaS) from consultants who can provide as little or as much functionality and support as is needed by your business " right now. This is significant, for the longer we have to spend brooding about and planning for future needs and capacities, the more cash that is lost on pricey consultants and designers, with nothing of benefit to show for the cash!

So what are the features of cloud computing which make it an attractive proposition for business?

Speed and simplicity of deployment. All that you need is a PC with web access, and you can plugin and go. No step up programs. No compatibility issues (providing your browser is up-to-date).

Flexible size. If your business expands and requires more processing capacity, it is simple to go ahead dial-up more computing juice to any degree required.

Global and Mobile reach. Any one in your organisation can immediately access the service, and via the Net share info with one another. You can control and secure everyone's access so that information is restricted to just individuals who need it. Staff who are on the move can have browser access to the central db and documents. Indeed with the storage and computing power available now on NetBooks, tablets, and PDAs it is simple use these mobile devices "offline" and to sync with the centralized database when connectivity is available once more.

Disaster Resilience. Your most important office may be flooded, but your staff can still continue to telecommute. Their workstation may have crashed, but since key information is secured in a central database, the user can simply move to another workstation and keep working.

Strategic alignment. IT systems are heading away from plain record keeping and automation of base administration, to facilitate the strategic development of a business. Employees not only communicate within their teams, but also with the planners, strategists, administrators, and policy makers in the enterprise.

Enterprise Scorecard is a new, cloud-based software service that permits businesses to operate their core management systems from the cloud. It shares many of the features of Google applications and Microsoft SharePoint, but it takes this a level up and offers a speedily employed andcustomisablebusiness database and mobile data collection service. Available either as an internal business portal, or as a regular subscription service, it supports ISO standards for Quality, Environmental, Security, and Health & Safety Management systems.

Learn Spanish - Sensible Tips For Rapid Learning

By Gloria Martin

Picking up a new language is not as difficult as you might think. In fact, learning a new language can be a lot of fun! When you give it some thought, knowing another language can mean many great possibilities. If you travel, it can make communication much less of a problem. It will even increase your communication skills right where you live. Many jobs require applicants to know at least two languages. Spanish is definitely emerging as America's second language.

Great! You want to learn how to speak Spanish. Fortunately, learning how to speak Spanish doesn't have to be hard. Even if you are someone who has trouble learning languages; Spanish is such a dominant language today, and there are plenty of methods to use that will make your learning process easier. Next we'll go into some strategies you can employ to make learning Spanish a whole lot easier and more fun.

The first thing you should focus on is the way you pronounce words in Spanish. When it comes down to it, speaking a language well is what's most important. Practice speaking by reading out loud from Spanish publications or novels. Read out loud from Spanish magazines and practice repeating phrases you hear in Spanish from fluent speakers. By doing this, you'll start to instinctively use the right words and inflections when you speak. This is actually a very enjoyable thing to practice once you get into the spirit of it. It can feel like singing!

It's much easier to learn from a CD course. If you're feeling shy about learning a new language, CDs are great to use. You can just listen to how the words are spoken and then used in a sentence. The CD can walk you through the same basic learning steps that a classroom based course will use, but you won't have to worry about making mistakes in front of other people. Another great benefit is you can take your Spanish course with you. Great convenience because you can listen in MP3 format or use your CD player. No problemo! You are not limited to one central location for your learning. Teach yourself to think in Spanish. This takes some work, but as you are going about your day try to translate your thoughts into Spanish. You will need to start slow with this. Periodically throughout your day ask yourself how you would say the words you are thinking in Spanish. This is something you have to practice regularly to get comfortable with it. You will be surprised at how fast you will be able to do this translation process once you practice it for a while. At some point, you will become so accustomed to this that you won't even have to make an effort; you'll just find yourself thinking in Spanish. If you know how to think in Spanish you can work on saying those thoughts out loud--the key to truly interacting in Spanish.

A good technique is to actually have the Spanish names for everything in front of you; you can use tags or stickers with the words written on them. Make labels for everything in your home and, if you can, your work space. This way you will get used to associating the correct words with the correct items. If you start to form a good vocabulary in the new language, you'll reduce the risk of making socially awkward errors. When you don't know what you're saying, you can end up confusing similar sounding words that mean very different things. If you label your home and office you'll be able to practice learning your new language in a comfortable environment which, depending on your learning style, could speed up your learning process.

Take a course. Some people are uncomfortable to learn Spanish with other people. It's common to have to speak the language outloud in front of the whole class. This can be very intimidating!

However, it is highly recommended to try and do it no matter what mistakes you make. That's the best way to learn because everyone else is learning, too! All of you can join in and make mistakes! And that is a lot better than talking to a local, making some insulting mistake, and not being forgiven.

Work on improving your "ear" for the language. Many languages are more oral-based than written. Good listening skills are still very important if the language is still a living language. Knowing how to write the alphabet or how to write a correct sentence will only get you so far. You need to be able to understand the language when you hear it. The best results will come from listening to the language whenever possible. When you get to the point where you can correctly identify Spanish after hearing just a few words, then you'll be on your way to success.

Simple flashcards are a way you can easily test your knowledge. Flashcards are indeed a familiar but very effective way to help you remember things. Language is largely about memorizing, and these cards help you do just that! Don't just use them for simple objects, but also for grammar, remembering the different tenses and other aspects of learning the language. Flashcards are a tool that you can take around with you and use whenever you find an extra moment. It can also be useful to work with someone else and have them test you with the flashcards. Remember to use both sides of the flashcards; one side for Spanish and the other for your native language, in case you need to remind yourself what a word means.

It will also help you to watch Spanish TV and movies. It's not hard because all movie rental outlets have a foreign language section, plus there are many Spanish broadcasts on TV. You'll be able to learn how Spanish is really spoken without needing to travel. This is great if you don't live near a Spanish speaking population. Just turn on the subtitles when you watch. Then, as you learn to identify parts of speech and words, you can turn off the subtitles and see how much you understand. You can accelerate your learning by doing this exercise. These are some ways to help you in your study of Spanish; there are many other techniques you can use as well. Many people get help when they start learning another language. Some hints will work for you while other hints won't. Your best bet is to look around and try out as many methods as you can find. Speaking Spanish is something you can do; just find the method that works for you and be persistent.

There's no reason that speaking another language has to be hard or complicated. Keep in mind that Spanish is much easier to learn than many other languages. Many people want to learn new languages nowadays, which is why there are such a variety of different systems and courses on the market. Pick the system that appeals to you most. The perfect method for you to learn is out there; you just have to find it. If you are patient and you work slowly but steadily you could become fluent in your new language before you know it!

It's great to learn a new language, but many times its not easy to find out the best way.

Perhaps you're thinking about getting a book from some bookstore. A class is a great idea, and so is meeting people who are fluent. There are so many alternatives for learning Spanish. Don't forget to have loads of fun!

Learning Spanish or any new language does not have to be so painful. Getting started seems the hardest part sometimes, but it'll become a lot less difficult in a little time. Just try to stick with it, and use all the tricks you can find. Soon enough you'll be fluent.

A great tool to learn Spanish effectively is the Tell Me More Spanish software program. Test this language learning system out and be amazed.

PC Tablet News: NVIDIA's Quad-Core vs. IPad 2's Dual Core?

By Paul Barber

For at least two generations of chips, NVIDIA has been at the leading edge of making processors for mobile devices, tablets included. In current PC tablet news, Asus head Jonney Shih announced at the AsiaD meeting that their new Transformer Prime will be rolling out in November and that it'll be featuring NVIDIA's new quad-core, Tegra 3. The processor, codenamed Kal-El, is scheduled to run Android tablets with the Ice Cream Sandwich OS.

So what does this all mean for Apple's contender for this generation of tablets, the iPad 2? Well, the iPad 2 runs on Apple A5, a dual core chip. Let's do a quick tablet COMPUTER comparison primarily based on the two processors.

The Apple A5

The A5 has 2 cores and features a CPU clock rate of 800 MHz to 1 GHz, which is a good speed as far as tablet PCs go. It also includes a 512 MB DDR2 RAM at 533 MHz and a GPU clocked at 200 MHz. The A5 was a huge improvement from the A4, doubling the computing speed and upping the graphics power.

The Tegra 3

The Tegra 3, with its four cores (and a 5th companion core), clocks in at 1.5 Ghz. It also features a 12-core GPU, that can output 2560x1600 video. Tablets with this processor can output high-definition video, that's definite. The Asus Transformer Prime is has a mini HDMI port, which pretty much affirms the quad-core's 1080p H.264 High Visibility video decoding. With these specs, the Tegra is reckoned to be 5 times faster than its predecessor, the Tegra 2. Small wonder gadget and PERSONAL COMPUTER tablet news sites are all abuzz about this futuristic chip.

The said NVIDIA quad-core is scheduled to be released later in the year for tablets and early in the new year for smartphones.

We'll certainly see what the Tegra 3 can do in PC tablet news in the future (or at the very least, as soon at the Asus Transformer Prime hits the shelves), but right now, it seems like it's shaping up as a major contender against the Apple iPad 2. Does Apple have something in the works that may have one up the Tegra 3? We'll see, but knowing the electronics giant, it must have something up its sleeve.

Free Mac Software?

By Daniel Jones

So, precisely what is mac freeware?

The title "Freeware" is frequently used throughout the internet but quite often wrongly. It may be the use of the word "Free" in the name that has caused the definition to become confused with most people thinking that they can use this software however they like. Unfortunately "Freeware" doesn't mean Free

Basically Freeware means that you can use the software indefinitely without making any payment. The software still has a license governing how you can use it. There are usually one or more restricted usage rights, this could be that the software is not modified in any way, that no one else other than themselves are allowed to distribute the software or that you can not make derivative works from the software.

Why not just give this stuff away with no license?

There is usually a reason for why the developer has chosen to allow you to use this software for free. For example, the developer wants you to use a 'Lite' version of the software and be so impressed with it that you buy the full pro version or they want you to go to their website to download it where they hope to tempt you with other goods.

Is this a bad thing? No. It's free to use! How can this be bad?

OK. Maybe there is some kind of marketing agenda going on and maybe they would like you to purchase the pro version but you are still getting to use the software for nothing. And if you do like the 'Lite' version of the software why not go ahead and buy the full pro version.

So what software is totally free?

I would advise reading any small print before deciding for yourself that you can do as you see fit with someone elses software but the correct term is "Free Software" but this term is also very often misused so check the small print.

Here a a couple or other terms relating to Free Software where the meanings have become misused.

Shareware - This type of software you can distribute as much as you like as long as you don't take payment or modify the source code. The big difference between this and Freeware is that the license to use the software only last for a limited time (usually 30 days) after which you need to make a payment to continue using it.

Open Source - You can modify and distribute this software however much you like. You can use it to create your own software packages and some of the best software around is open source software. What you are never allowed to do is to sell anything that you create from using someone elses open source software. Any license information contained within the source code must remain intact along with any credits to the previous developer.
