3 Pitfalls of Link Building

By Youself Benami

Link building is the cornerstone of SEO and is becoming more important everyday as the web becomes more competitive. There is no questioning the fact that certain types of backlinks play a major role in getting your site on the first page of search engines and keeping them there for a long time. How do you benefit? Your reward is more traffic and sales. Backlinks have such a powerful affect on Google rankings that many people spend a lot of time focusing on them and misinterpret the results that they get from their efforts. If you listen to credible people you would soon learn that most of the link building techniques do not work. To start off, you should always keep it in your mind that all backlinks aren't good.

If your links aren't relevant then you will lose search engine ranking. The most important part of building links to your site is doing it in a natural way. The search engines dislike irrelevant backlinks and always find them when analyzing and calculating your site's placement, so; the most effective thing to do is give it what it wants. If you do things the right way then your site will be rewarded. Getting quality, relevant links is the key, instead of focusing solely on the number of incoming links. The usual link building strategy, which is also the wrong way, is to go out and place your site's link on all the sites that you can get away with. In simple words, this will lead to nothing but failure.

There are a great number of webmasters who understand the process but even more do not. So, what makes one webmaster's efforts work but another's fail? The only thing separating the successes and failures are the methods that they use. If you are going to use link building techniques that search engines don't like, then you obviously won't generate much traffic from them, and nor will you get any direct visitors.

There is nothing to be gained from getting backlinks from sites that are not readable to the search engines.

The most recognized type of links to help your site are one way backlinks; however, one automated yet still white hat way to build links is to use an ethical link exchange. Before buying links or subscribing to any services, however, do your research, as not all of these are legitimate. Some links seem like a good deal until you later find that they turn out to be "no follow" or that they disappear altogether after a short time. These are things you have to always check for, that your link remains intact and that it's "do follow." There are so many people selling backlinks and link building services today that you can't simply trust them all; it's necessary to look into their reputation and make sure they really do the work they promise to do.

Furthermore, you should never link to any sites that has a bad reputation because it will carry over to your site.

When you're linking to these sites, technically you're telling Google that you recommend them, which results in a penalty coming your way. Keeping a close eye on your site's outbound links will save your reputation in the eyes of Google.

Always try to get links from websites that are one way, highly relevant, and that have a high pagerank. If you do this right, your site will become a powerhouse on the first page for some very competitive keywords, and you know what that can mean. This always pays in the long run, as it's the safest approach. Today, it takes an ethical approach to make big money online and to keep making it.

Link building mistakes can be very detrimental to the health of your website and internet business. If you follow these tips, you should be able to avoid most of the more common link building errors.
