Finding out how to Duplicate A Hard Drive

By Tom Bishop

If you're wanting to burn or copy a DVD of some sort, then let's talk quickly about how this is done.

Note: For those of you who are experts on this already, you won't find this fascinating in the slightest. In fact, this is very basic and you won't benefit at all. Newbies only!

1. Duplicating a disc (BluRay, DVD, CD, etc.)

When people say "burning" they are simply referring to duplicating something. It's simply the lingo I suppose. So when you want to copy the contents from one CD to another, you are attempting to "burn it." If your friend gave you some music on a CD, you might want to burn it.

2. Copying media files to another device

An example of copying media to another device would be like copying the video files from a DVD to play on your iPhone or something similar. This is really popular right now because you can literally watch videos while you're on the go. Even the quality remains high, which is really important for some people. You can also copy the media to your PC from another device.

3. Converting & transforming video files to different extentions

An AVI file type is a lot smaller than the actual DVD video file that's on the DVD disc. So to make space on your hard drive and make it possible to transfer these videos to your cell phone or something similar, you'd just transform it first to cut down on the size and make it much more portable.

Example: A normal 5 gig DVD can be compressed down to only 100 or 200 megabytes if you do it to an AVI format. The quality won't be as good of course, but it will still be very easy to watch.

Where to start?

First you need to decide what you want. Luckily the video manipulation and media copying software all are very easy and do a lot of things in one package, so I'd definitely start searching for one that accomplishes what you need done.
