How To Do IT Outsourcing Right

By Gnifrus Urquart

IT outsourcing can be a very smart way to do business provided that you know what the pitfalls can be and how to avoid them. You'll be able to save money, get a quality job done, and often find that you get much more than you paid for. It's all in how you go about it.

It's quite likely that you're going to end up hiring someone you never meet. This is often how the world of outsourcing works and there's not much you can do to change it. If you try to limit your general applications to local individuals you aren't likely to reap all of the benefits of outsourcing.

Give your new hire a small test project to get the ball rolling. You want to verify that it is more than possible for him or her to deliver on the promises made during the application process. It won't take long before you know whether or not you can place your confidence in the individual.

Avoid the idea of a long term contract. This might be good for the individual you outsource to but it may not turn out to be such a great business idea for you. Contracts are generally never specific enough to really be beneficial to protect anyone. It just maintains your interaction with the provider. Once you know that the individual you've hired is fully capable, offering them a contract can help ensure that you keep them but don't be in a hurry.

Let them do the job. It's easy to believe that if you start outsourcing you will be able to hold on tighter to the reigns of the project and micromanage. Micromanagement almost always backfires. Your new outsourced material will not get the full benefit of the expertise that you hired the individual for, and because you are too intense to work with the provider is likely to end up meeting your guidelines but not over delivering.

Always be fair with those who do your outsourcing. Don't delay payment. Don't be afraid to let them know that they did an excellent job. Most of the professionals you will hire work alone, in their homes, and they often don't receive positive feedback without prompting. It almost always encourages them to work even harder for you the next time around.

IT outsourcing saves the company money and it allows you to relax once you have found the right person for the job. Some of the best work comes from outsourcing professionals. Just go slow, take it one step at a time, and give the working relationship a little time to develop. You're likely to be blown away.
