Top Items To Be Aware Of House Sewage Treatment Systems

By Adriana Noton

There are many things that occur in life that a person does not think about until something happens to bring it to their attention. This can be said about the systems within a home that carry the waste away from from the property. Sadly, most people don't even consider asking questions about home sewage treatment systems. Assumptions are made that everything is properly taken care of and no problems exist. For those that wait until a problem arises, there are several things that a home owner needs to know.

While most people realize the the plumbing carries waste away from the home, they lack a true understanding of why these systems are so important. Simply illustrated, properly installed products are needed to kill micro-organisms that can cause disease, remove solid waste, and break down organic compounds into their smallest forms. It is also important to remove foul odors and toxins from the vicinity.

All waste that leaves a home is either considered a liquid or a solid. Over ninety percent of what goes through a drain or toilet is water. The remaining liquids and solids are combined human waste as food particles. Each of these products contain bacteria, viruses, and other organisms. If the waste is left untreated, contamination of the soil and drinking water could occur.

Most homes that are built within city limits have plumbing that was installed and tied into the city's system. Most rural homes and those built outside of city limits have to provide their own waste removal on their property. The two most common sewage systems around are wastewater treatment systems and microfast systems.

Septic tanks are large concrete containers that get buried fairly close to the home. All sewage lines are run to the tank underneath the ground. When waste is flushed, the products goes out into the tank. Septic tanks us a process called bacterial degradation. In essence, the heavier solid material sink to the bottom, while the floating scum is removed and cleaned.

Aerated tanks work in the same basic fashion. The main difference is that an aerated tank gets chemicals added into the system that promote greater decomposition of waste before it gets into the drain field. Both types have two main parts, the tank and the disposal field. The sludge settles to the bottom of each tank while the scum that floats on top is chemically treated and released into the surrounding ground.

Each of the systems have limitations. While both of them treat the drained water appropriately, the solid sludge that remains in the container can cause contamination if not properly monitored. Many tanks get clogged or leak into the surround area, thus contamination of ground water is a problem. It is best to use professionals to drain and remove the contents of a full tank.

Prior to making a decision about the best sewage treatment systems to use on a property, call in a professional to take soil samples. Professional waste services know which tanks work best in different soils and can improve the odds regarding contamination. While homeowners may not think regularly about waste removal, it is a good idea to have a working knowledge in order to ask questions.
