Learn About Setting Up A Home Computer Network

By Mike Taylor

It is understandable for some people to be put off from attempting to set up their own home computer network, though in actual fact the steps that you need to take in order to successfully create a home network are relatively straightforward. With modern advances in operating system software and technology improvements, much of the equipment is plug and play, meaning that, once you have the right equipment, your operating system will be able to sort out the bulk of the work for you in terms of configuration settings and security.

Due to this evolution of operating system software, integrating plug and play systems that allow us to be taken through the steps of setting up a network by our computers, the biggest challenge we are likely to face in this process is actually buying the right equipment in the first place. If you are considering setting up your own home computer network, the main hardware components you will need are listed below.

Your first choice is whether you want a wireless network or a wired network. With a wired network you can be sure that all of the data that is networked in your home is protected and can not be hacked into from a computer that is not connected to your network, though you will have to deal with organizing the cables around your home, which can be unsightly. Wireless networks require a little more thought as you will need to make sure that you install certain security measures to ensure that your network can not be accessed by somebody outside of your home.

Wired networks require simply a router and a cable for each computer. Make sure the router has enough inputs for all the computers you wish to network and that the cables are Cat 5 ethernet cables. Wireless networks can be made up with only a wireless router and wireless network cards for every computer you want to add to the network. Make sure that the router and network cards are of the same specification and are compatible with each other. An easy way of doing this is to buy products in the same range, as they will have been designed and manufactured to work in harmony.

It is important to bear in mind that if you wish to set-up a wireless network, you should consider installing certain security options to prevent unwanted access from people outside of your home. Co-currently, if you would like each computer to have access to the internet, you should look into purchasing a router modem which will both control the data transfer across your network and also provide internet connection ability.

For wired networks, once everything has been plugged in and switched on, you should automatically be able to access your computer network, and an icon on your computer desktop will tell you that you are connected, though you may need to set up some folder sharing options if you wish to access data on other computers. Wireless networks should also automatically be discovered by your computer, though setting up an internet connection will require you to access the router's home screen. To do this, find the address of the home screen in the router's user's manual, type it into the address bar of your internet software client and then type in the default username and password provided in the manual.
