Period Cramps Can Be Painful

By Adriana Noton

Suffering from period cramps is a monthly reality for a majority of women around the world. Many of these women may even think that there is no alternative to simply suffering through it. Nothing could be farther from the truth. There are a few very easy things that, if tried, can help manage or completely resolve such a recurring problem.

Many of these tips and tricks can seem counterintuitive. For example, one of the best ways to manage pain during that time of the month is exercise. It might feel uncomfortable at first, but getting the muscles in your body moving will reduce any inflammation, and do wonders to relieve pain by having your body produce natural pain-fighting chemicals.

Another solution is to simply enjoy some tea. Many teas, such as mint and chamomile, have been used for hundreds of years by many different cultures for that same reason. The teas help bring the body and mind into a more balanced, calmer state, and can do wonders in the area of pain relief.

Heat has also been used for centuries to combat pain, and it can be as simple as applying a hot water bottle or a hot compress to the abdomen or lower back. Another simple way of providing warmth and compression is simply by tying a scarf around your midsection. A hot bath, or a hot shower, can relax and re-energize the entire body.

There is another important fact to know about this time of the month is that the body needs extra nutrient to replace those lost. Some of those vital nutrients are calcium and magnesium. Many professionals will recommend increasing your calcium intake during that time by as much as two hundred mg. That extra calcium can not only provide relief, but strengthen your bones as well.

Another important nutrient the body needs is magnesium. It is always best to avoid synthetic versions, as the best way to get magnesium is through various foods, such as fish, fresh raw veggies, and nuts. Taking a vitamin supplement isn't bad, but synthetic nutrients can sometimes not fit the body well. There are, however, natural supplements on the market.

Of course, many women around the world use medication during that time, and there are many companies that spend millions of dollars in advertising convincing women that it is best to do so. However, chronic use of pain medication can have serious side effects, and can in some ways make the exact problem it is trying to solve worse by increasing instead of relieving pain.

Suffering from menstrual cramps does not need to be an ordeal every month for the entirety of a woman's adulthood life. While it is true that by nature, the female body goes through constant cycles that may always come with a measure of discomfort, by getting more in touch with your body and being more aware of your body's needs, it is possible to make those cycles far more pleasant than they are.
