The Brilliance of SSD Caching

By Joseph Robertson

Solid State Drive or SSD which is more generally called the 'electronic disk ' uses a solid state retention plot or space to store info and provides unrestrictive access to it in an identical manner as that of a traditional hard drive. The primary differentiation between an SSD and hard drives or floppy disks is made on the basis of the mechanism in which they cache information. Solid State Drives use micro-chips to store info and include no moving parts while hard drives use spinning disks, and other moving parts to store data on them.

Random Access Memory needs constant power supply so as to retain info inside it, whereas, an SSD requires no power supply at all to hold data for longer amounts of time. It is composed of flash memory modules that function in a way the devices keep info even if the power is switched off and therefore , can hold data for months.

SSD Caching has become a vital part of the new age notebook design like the Samsung ultra book, the MacBook Pro, or the Hp ProBook, for example. One being the reason that they do not heat up and the device is able to maintain a consistent temperature even in the harshest of environments.

Traditional HHDs used to operate by storing information about 7,200 r.p.m. This phenomenon produced a major amount of heat within the system which needed to be removed by installing cooling fans. Often , people also need to buy specifically designed cooling pads for their PCs. SSD has removed that issue of heating up of portables and notebooks, making them slim and more compact in design.

SSDs, like the standard hard drives, have evolved into super fast devices possessing the capabilities of 120mb/s read and 90mb/s writing speeds. The initial SS drives had caching speeds of only 14mb/s. SSDs cache data silently which can often be regarded to their ingenious micro-chip design instead of the spinning wheel system. Caching data through SS drives has become the need of all of the PC users because of their amazing caching speeds and now everybody can do so. Because SSDs are available for a fair price.
