How to become a Software Tester

By Isaac C. Vincent

At the moment it can seem hard to find good jobs. But for some people, software testing is proving to offer a chance of good career development. Thanks to the apps industry the need for testers is higher than ever, but there is also plenty of competition from other prospective candidates. In light of this, it can be difficult straightening out how to take the first steps to begin your career.

The most obvious requirement of someone working in testing is that they be proficient with computers. People that can understand programming are sought after, but there may be opportunities for someone that shows a good level of all-round computer skill to get trained on the job. You'll also need to be good at writing reports and using word processing programs, so that's why it's extra important that you make your application documents, such as your CV, look as good as they possibly can.

Employers need to sift out people that are committed to this career, and one way of doing that is to look at qualifications. The ISTQB levels are a definite way of doing this, as these are certificates just for software testing. It will also set you up as a confident worker. Having said this, actual experience will always be preferred, and workers often take qualifications after beginning a career in testing, so don't think that they're compulsory.

Following this you're onto the nerve wracking process of applying and going through interview at potential employers. They'll be looking for people that are willing to adapt their thinking and maintain focus in their work. The worst software testers will simply run the same scripts and do as little manual work as possible, leaving the company open to bugs further down the line. If you can show that you're above this 'job's worth' attitude then that will go a long way to marking you out.

So there you have it. It's a straightforward process, and the rewards are compelling. It's just a case of going for it if you're ready to take on a new challenge.
