The Pros And Cons Of Managed Servers

By Kevin Abrahams

If one has been using an unmanaged server, he or she may understand that the unmanaged server require a lot of added responsibilities. They need the owners to continuously and constantly manage and maintain the servers, continuously update the servers. The users also need to keep the databases and storages managed. The user must also make sure that the server is free from hackers by constantly updating the security add on. Freeing a user or businesses from the hassle of having to deal with all the technicalities of an unmanaged server, the managed servers were developed.

Managed servers are the best choice for businesses or companies that are not exactly well versed in the field of server management. Thus, managed servers allow them to transfer the control of their servers to so called server managers, or experts. With managed servers, companies will not need to worry, and could dedicate a much larger portion of their time to other important business process aspect, instead of spending a lot of time trying to understand the systems and procedures of managing a server.

An unmanaged server on the other hand, is as the term "unmanaged" suggests, is on the contrary not managed by a group of experts. This requires a lot of knowledge as regards how to run scripts, how to configure, how to compile software, basically all the technical aspects of server management. This is very tedious to several companies. Although it is tougher to use, it is very much less costly to use.

The managed server is also known to have a fast operation speed. The servers also have a relatively larger capacity, allowing for fast transfers of data. From the above, it is very easy to perceive how the advantages of a managed server can make it look like the best choice.

There are major disadvantages however. One would be the cost. If one perceives that he possesses a big volume of data to be transferred, one might face the risk of reaching the server limit. Every time this happens, a penalty is incurred. There are also a number of different fees that one might have to pay once in a while. We know that fees can be quite burdensome, especially when they come in bunches. This is however one of the small disadvantages of a managed server. There are still a lot of considerations. Nevertheless, the advantages seemingly outweigh the cons of this decision.
